![]() ![]() It’s an MR James-style slow burner that’ll stay with you. It’s a haunted house story, basically, but an incredibly creepy one. Ghost stories seem to be coming back into fashion now, so The Haunting of #24 might’ve been a bit ahead of its time. Everyone else can just enjoy the endless creativity of the monster effects. ![]() Fans of J-horror will enjoy the cameo by Takashi Shimizu. The film was written and directed by Toshihiro Nishimura, a special effects artist renowned for his gore effects – and he holds nothing back here. The plot begins as a straightforward high school love triangle, as new girl Monami takes an interest in Mizushima, the boyfriend of Keiko, the meanest girl in school. Frankenstein Girl is amazingly weird in the way that only Japanese movies can be. It’s another movie that proves even apparently exhausted genres can come good if you actually bother to pay attention to the script. Some of the special effects are a bit ropey, but that’s a minor gripe, really. But it’s sort of great nonetheless: set in Australia and starring Nathan Phillips (out of Wolf Creek) and Leigh Whannell (out of Saw), it’s your basic kids-go-out-in-the-woods-and-get-slaughtered movie, except with good writing, great characterisation, and some really nasty, really scary ideas. ![]() It’s incredibly gruesome and bleak and doesn’t have a happy ending by anyone’s standards. Dying Breed (2008)ĭying Breed is not for the faint-hearted. It’s a zombie comedy, and that’s admittedly an incredibly tired genre, but Aaah! Zombies!! is clever, funny, and well-written enough to get away with it. It’s mostly in black and white, switching into color when we’re seeing the zombies from the perspective of the normal, terrified public. The movie is shown mostly from the point of view of the zombies, who see themselves as normal or perhaps superhuman, since they no longer feel pain.
